End of Semester

7 05 2009

Now that it’s the end of the semester, I have a choice of whether I want to continue to write in this blog or not. I’m definitely not going to close it down, but I won’t be producing two posts a week anymore either. So, for the time being, here’s a directory of sorts to some of my posts:

Blog Presentation to Online Journalism Class

7 05 2009

My blog, “AE Philly Teen Scene,” covered places to be and things to do in Philly for people under 21, particularly falling between the ages of 18 and 20. Other than a few entries on luxurious things that are totally out of my budget, i.e. the ACES Train, most of my blog posts focused on events and places that are inexpensive, fun and otherwise unusual in Philadelphia and the surrounding area.

Almost Arlington Photo Shoot

I did a photo shoot with the guys– here’s what I have edited so far. Lookin’ fine, aren’t they?

Oh, and if you’re into cover bands, the band is doing a cover show in Sewell, NJ on May 22.  Nothing but cover tunes!

The Head Cheese

23 04 2009

So you’re really bored; you’re tired of clubbing and going to concerts and art exhibits and participating in the usual riffraff that all of you under-21 hooligans like to participate in; you want to think outside the box, and be entertained in a totally new way.

Well, what about cheese?

Anthony Dragonetti sits across from me in my online journalism class, and we found out yesterday that we live in the same town, and on top of that, he works in the supermarket behind my house.

His specialty?

Cheese.

Yes. He works with gourmet cheese, and even blogs about cheese. So there you go. I suggest you visit his blog and educate yourself, then go on a cheese tasting tour in South Philly. He even has a map to help you.

My Adventure at Lucy’s

15 04 2009

The girls and I went to Lucy’s Hat Shop on Saturday. We were carded at the door, but I have a feeling that that only occurs on proper “out” nights, meaning, they’d probably let you in to eat and dance if it weren’t Saturday night. The place was their suggestion–I had never heard of it–and it was definitely not what I expected. In my mind, we were going dancing at a bar/nightclub type place, something that included both but when we got there, it was way more ‘bar’ and way less ‘nightclub.’
HowEVER, I’m so glad we went here.
The place has two bars, one in the front and one in the back room, and there are a few tables, a little lounge, and a small dance floor. I’d call it “delightfully dodgy”–its slightly rundown, humble atmosphere was exactly what made it so charming.
One of the girls had to use the bathroom immediately upon our arrival (there’s always one), so we walked through the people to the back. A group of guys (yeah, just guys) were dancing together, or more specifically, hopping on one foot and punching the air (in my experience from living in Britain for a few months, this is usually a clear sign of British people).
While the two of us were standing there waiting for her to come back out, the hopping-punching guys grabbed a hold of us and forced us in the friendliest way possible to dance with them. For the rest of the night, we hung with our new British friends.
The music was great: a perfect blend of old, new, foreign, odd and otherwise. We didn’t tire of what we danced to. The drinks were good and not horribly expensive. Definitely a new favorite of mine.

Almost Arlington Update – Show May 15

14 04 2009

Finally, another show:

5/15/2009 6:00 PM at University of Arts
320 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, New Jersey 19102

The band should finish up recording by the end of April, and then hopefully we’ll see some touring.

I just tried to add an audio file of the band’s music, but I have to purchase an upgrade. Boo. I’ll figure out a loophole later  :)

MAP IT!

13 04 2009

Here’s a map to supplement my posts about events and places in Philly. If you’ve read older posts and would like to pinpoint exactly where venues, restaurants, etc. are located, click around the map to find them. I have categorized them by changing their icons; for example, the fork and knife symbolizes a restaurant, the comedy-tragedy masks show theaters, and the martini glasses are nightclubs. Pull the map to the right to see where First Friday is located; you’ll see two pink pushpins and a line connecting them.

By clicking on a symbol, you can find out more information or navigate to their websites. Enjoy!

The Roxxy

10 04 2009

This is hopefully the first of several posts this coming week about clubs in Philly that are 18 and up.

Why do it this week? Well, it’s my baby sister’s 18th birthday on Monday  :)

Roxxy

First up is The Roxxy,  939 N. Delaware Ave, “Nightlife at its Finest.”
Has anyone been to this club? Definitely comment and review it for me; I’d love to hear someone’s opinion.

Here’s what Philly2Night has to say:

The Roxxy is the ultimate nightlife experience, the parties are massive and exciting like nothing the tri-state area has seen before.

The Roxxy has 4 rooms to party in and has a combined capacity of 2000 people… no more weekends of standing elbow to elbow in some tiny lounge in Olde City or Manayunk. Or having to circle around the block multiple times to find parking, The Roxxy offers plenty of free parking as well as velvet parking for VIP’s.

The Roxxy brings a mixture of New York, Vegas and Cali style nightlife right to Philly!!”

There are tons of different posters for an event tonight hosted by Q102 and Baya from the Real World Brooklyn. DJ 54 advertises Top 40, hip hop, dance and mash-ups.

It looks cool–I’m definitely game to try this place out.

OH, but the dress code is hilarious:
“DRESS FOR ALL EVENTS: CLUB FASHIONABLE, NO HATS WITH SPORTS TEAM LOGOS, NO LONG SHIRTS IN ANY FORM,  NO SOLID T-SHIRTS, NO TIMS, FINAL DECISION MADE AT DOOR.”

… Only in Philly!

Local Skater’s Blog

6 04 2009

Do you skate?

I told the guy sitting next to me that I’m going to post about his blog. This is him (the one lying on the pavement):
EricYes. Someone is doing an ollie OVER him.
Even if you’re not a skater

…More later. Class is about to start.

Edit:

Wow, I stopped mid-sentence to pay attention in class.  Ha!

ANYWAY, check out Eric’s blog about skating.  He has a few entertaining interviews with skaters, tips and research on learning new tricks, and skating sites in different cities.  His most recent blog post is a disturbing picture of several cops “using necessary force” to subdue a skater. I never really understood why the fuzz makes such a big deal about skateboarders.  They’re really not doing anything terribly wrong, but for some reason they’re just a bunch of hooligans causing a ruckus. Oh well. Keep causing a ruckus, guys  :)

Stroll

3 04 2009

Some people may think that when life gives you lemons, blog about it.  Well, with the lemons life threw at me, I am left uninspired to write for today. So, here’s a Philly blog stroll:

Comic lovers, Geekadelphia posted about a book discussion of Jeff Smith’s book, RASL, at Brave New Worlds in Philly on April 23. No? Well FiftyOne:FiftyOne gives you a few things to do this weekend in the grand old city, including First Friday, Philly Spring Cleanup on Saturday, and the home opener on Sunday. Philebrity has even more suggestions, nightlife listings, and art listings. Now, go play. The weather is supposed to be gorgeous, so enjoy.

Twilight! (*hides face*)

31 03 2009

Yes, I did.  I broke down and gave in to nearly all of the women I work with who have been raving, and I bought Twilight.
Why is this relevant to an arts and entertainment blog, you ask?  Well, it’s what a lot of people are currently entertained by, this book and vampires and the name “Cullen” and anything that sounds like “Cullen.”

*If you haven’t finished the book/seen the movie and you’re avoiding spoilers, stop reading! I’ll mostly be examining why man-of-your-dreams Edward Cullen is, well, the man of your dreams BUT I don’t want to have to censor spoilers, so just quit reading here if you’re afraid I may give something away.
