My Adventure at Lucy’s

15 04 2009

The girls and I went to Lucy’s Hat Shop on Saturday. We were carded at the door, but I have a feeling that that only occurs on proper “out” nights, meaning, they’d probably let you in to eat and dance if it weren’t Saturday night. The place was their suggestion–I had never heard of it–and it was definitely not what I expected. In my mind, we were going dancing at a bar/nightclub type place, something that included both but when we got there, it was way more ‘bar’ and way less ‘nightclub.’
HowEVER, I’m so glad we went here.
The place has two bars, one in the front and one in the back room, and there are a few tables, a little lounge, and a small dance floor. I’d call it “delightfully dodgy”–its slightly rundown, humble atmosphere was exactly what made it so charming.
One of the girls had to use the bathroom immediately upon our arrival (there’s always one), so we walked through the people to the back. A group of guys (yeah, just guys) were dancing together, or more specifically, hopping on one foot and punching the air (in my experience from living in Britain for a few months, this is usually a clear sign of British people).
While the two of us were standing there waiting for her to come back out, the hopping-punching guys grabbed a hold of us and forced us in the friendliest way possible to dance with them. For the rest of the night, we hung with our new British friends.
The music was great: a perfect blend of old, new, foreign, odd and otherwise. We didn’t tire of what we danced to. The drinks were good and not horribly expensive. Definitely a new favorite of mine.
