My Adventure at Lucy’s

15 04 2009

The girls and I went to Lucy’s Hat Shop on Saturday. We were carded at the door, but I have a feeling that that only occurs on proper “out” nights, meaning, they’d probably let you in to eat and dance if it weren’t Saturday night. The place was their suggestion–I had never heard of it–and it was definitely not what I expected. In my mind, we were going dancing at a bar/nightclub type place, something that included both but when we got there, it was way more ‘bar’ and way less ‘nightclub.’
HowEVER, I’m so glad we went here.
The place has two bars, one in the front and one in the back room, and there are a few tables, a little lounge, and a small dance floor. I’d call it “delightfully dodgy”–its slightly rundown, humble atmosphere was exactly what made it so charming.
One of the girls had to use the bathroom immediately upon our arrival (there’s always one), so we walked through the people to the back. A group of guys (yeah, just guys) were dancing together, or more specifically, hopping on one foot and punching the air (in my experience from living in Britain for a few months, this is usually a clear sign of British people).
While the two of us were standing there waiting for her to come back out, the hopping-punching guys grabbed a hold of us and forced us in the friendliest way possible to dance with them. For the rest of the night, we hung with our new British friends.
The music was great: a perfect blend of old, new, foreign, odd and otherwise. We didn’t tire of what we danced to. The drinks were good and not horribly expensive. Definitely a new favorite of mine.

The Roxxy

10 04 2009

This is hopefully the first of several posts this coming week about clubs in Philly that are 18 and up.

Why do it this week? Well, it’s my baby sister’s 18th birthday on Monday  :)

Roxxy

First up is The Roxxy,  939 N. Delaware Ave, “Nightlife at its Finest.”
Has anyone been to this club? Definitely comment and review it for me; I’d love to hear someone’s opinion.

Here’s what Philly2Night has to say:

The Roxxy is the ultimate nightlife experience, the parties are massive and exciting like nothing the tri-state area has seen before.

The Roxxy has 4 rooms to party in and has a combined capacity of 2000 people… no more weekends of standing elbow to elbow in some tiny lounge in Olde City or Manayunk. Or having to circle around the block multiple times to find parking, The Roxxy offers plenty of free parking as well as velvet parking for VIP’s.

The Roxxy brings a mixture of New York, Vegas and Cali style nightlife right to Philly!!”

There are tons of different posters for an event tonight hosted by Q102 and Baya from the Real World Brooklyn. DJ 54 advertises Top 40, hip hop, dance and mash-ups.

It looks cool–I’m definitely game to try this place out.

OH, but the dress code is hilarious:
“DRESS FOR ALL EVENTS: CLUB FASHIONABLE, NO HATS WITH SPORTS TEAM LOGOS, NO LONG SHIRTS IN ANY FORM,  NO SOLID T-SHIRTS, NO TIMS, FINAL DECISION MADE AT DOOR.”

… Only in Philly!
